Make a better Berry Mint Smash

This smash uses whole berries for juice, color, and texture, with mint and lemon keeping the fruit fresh rather than jammy. Sparkling water lightens the muddled base, so the finished drink should remain bright despite its deep color.

Technique

Press the berries firmly enough to release their juice, but muddle the mint gently to avoid shredding it. Add ice and sparkling water only after the fruit, syrup, and lemon are combined, then lift the dense berry mixture once from the bottom.

Serving

A rocks or tall glass both work as long as there is room for fresh ice. Garnish with a small mint sprig and a few intact berries so the drink looks deliberate rather than like the contents of the muddling glass.

What to avoid

Overworked mint turns into dark fragments and can taste vegetal. Berry sweetness also changes by season, so adding the full syrup automatically may produce a candy-like drink when strawberries are especially ripe.

Try a variation

Use whichever berries are best rather than forcing an equal three-berry mix. For a smoother drink, fine-strain the muddled base before adding it to fresh ice, though the result will lose some of the smash’s characteristic texture.

These notes explain how to execute and adapt the recipe shown above. Ingredients and serving traditions vary, so taste and adjust thoughtfully.
